Let’s dive in…

Dean is a brilliant up and coming scholar at the Mercatus Center. He writes a lot about AI but I was intrigued with his thoughts on industrial policy. How should the US use the tools of the state to support key industries if at all?

Frankly, I thought we’d disagree as I see Dean coming from a more traditional libertarian view but it turns out we mostly saw eye-to-eye. I loved his description of going to El Segundo and seeing the epicenter of physical/defense tech.

Here was the YouTube description of the conversation:

“In this insightful conversation, Alan Pentz and Dean Ball explore the challenges and opportunities facing American manufacturing in the 21st century. From the impact of China's economic policies to the potential of AI in reshaping industrial processes, this episode offers a comprehensive look at the future of U.S. manufacturing.

Dean shares his perspectives on balancing free market principles with strategic government action, and highlights innovative companies pushing the boundaries of manufacturing technology. Whether you're a policymaker, industry leader, or simply interested in the future of American industry, this episode provides valuable insights into how we can build a more competitive and resilient manufacturing sector.”
